Classic Cob Out In the Shed
Big Pete ‘Cob’ Smith is a regular figure at swap meets around the country and a bloke with his finger firmly on the pulse of the classic scene.
Tech Topics – Crankcase Breathing
The crankcase breathing of classic motorcycle engines is a subtle and neglected subject. Rex Bunn show how gains can be made to engine power, oil-tightness and service life by making simple improvements to crankcase breathing.
Norton – A multitude of Manxes
Jim Scaysbrook gets to ride five or six Nortons around the track at Pukekohe.
Six Speed Sensation
‘Super Six’, ‘X6’, ‘Hustler’ – depending on what country you were in, the Suzuki T20, introduced in late 1965, went by many names. But quite simply, it was sensational motorcycle – the first production six-speeder.
Tim Gibbes – Off-road trailblazer
The trail to England has been blazed comprehensively by aspiring Australian and New Zealand road racers and speedway riders since the mid 1920s, but the same was not the case for the relatively new (mainly post-war) forms of off-road competition, namely scrambling, or as the contientals referred to it, motorcross.
The Eighty Year Itch – The Indian Gypsy Tour
Ivor Dennis was reputedly the first Indian Motorcycle dealer in Australia, with a shop in the main street of Bairnsdale in East Gippsland, Victoria. In December 1927 a 70-strong party of Indian riders and passengers passed through Bairnsdale on their way to Sydney. 80 years later a group reassembled in Bairnsdale to remember the moment.
Rex Recreation
When Keith Hamilton was given a ‘sad collection of parts’ from which to reconstruct a 1905 Rex, he found the pile also contained large lumps of a 1906 model. So, when the original project was completed, which involved making a replica of an early carburetor from scratch, Keith gathered the surplus bits and set about breathing new life into the 1906 model. Read the story in his own words.
Peter Jones – The boy in blue
In the 1960’s the first Yamaha production racer, the TD1-A, crude as it was in many ways, was an exciting looking machine, and each subsequent model that little bit better than the one it replaced.
Zundapp – the other German flat twin
Think of German opposed twins and most people think of BMW. But for many years, another German marquee pioneered original thinking and very high standards of engineering. After such an illustrious history, it’s a shame Zundapp didn’t survive. Here we look at three variations on the theme.
