Immortal Muscle
Bob Jane’s HQ Monaro GTS 350 is one of the most famous competition cars in Australian muscle car history. Fortunately, it has recently emerged from a cost-no-object rebuild to concourse 1972 Improved Production standards. AMC takes an in-depth look at one of the greats.
Stolen Muscle
The first muscle car boom of the late 1960s and early ‘70s was ruined as much by vehicle theft and re-birthing scams as any other factor. The resulting spike in insurance premiums priced most of these cars out of reach. Sadly, the crooks are targeting these same muscle cars today – will your classic be next?
Memorable Muscle Racer
Touring car ace, Don Holland, thrived during the multi-class era of the annual Bathurst endurance race. The highlight of his numerous class victories was in 1970, when he chased home the Ford works team to finish third outright.
Tropical Muscle
The Surfers Paradise 12-Hour race for Series Production cars was the brainchild of local property developer Keith Williams, who wanted a big endurance race for Queensland that would rival the annual Bathurst clash. The Surfers event only lasted for two years, but produced a couple of unlikely Ford heroes in the process.
Monster Muscle
Tasmanian driver Gene Coo, raced a colourful variety of cars in his long and successful career, which spanned more than four decades. A highlight was his wild six cylinder turbocharged Commodore speedway sedan, that proved more than a match for the dominant V8s.
Muscle Sport
The Repco Tasman Revival, held at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway in late November, attracted a bumper entry of classic racing cars to relive the glory days of the annual series of races shared between New Zealand and Australia in the 1960s and ‘70s. AMC was there to soak up the nostalgia and excitement.
