The 2004 Globalstar Australian Rally Championship was one of the most interesting and absorbing contests through the Australian forests in years. It was the battle of the factory teams as defending champs Subaru fought off the challenge from Toyota and Mitsubishi, but there was also plenty of private teams who through skill, daring and mechanical know-how managed to take the fight right up to the heavily-resourced manufacturer outfits. It was the year the unique Group N/Prototype ARC formula came of age, and while the winner was the same as in 2003, Cody Crocker and Greg Foletta were forced to work very hard for their win. In a season of non-stop forest racing action, it was also the first year of the one-make Subaru Challenge for standard Subaru Imprezas, and the year Mitsubishi went rally with the locally-developed all-wheel-drive Magna V6.
